About Us

Our tinnitus support group was formed in March 1986 when a group of people who were experiencing tinnitus decided to meet on a regular basis to exchange coping ideas and to support each other.  We were encouraged and supported by Margot Boss, Hearing Therapist at Chesterfield & North Derbyshire Royal Hospital, who had met with each of us and talked through our tinnitus experiences.  At our first meeting we organised ourselves into various roles so that we could function efficiently without putting too much pressure on any one person.

As the years went on new members joined and others moved on.  We used to hold monthly meetings to which we invited speakers on a variety of interesting subjects and this continued until about 2006.  By then the internet was providing information about tinnitus, not always helpful unfortunately, and attendance at meetings declined.  However, the one thing that has remained constant is our regular communication with members in the form of a bi-monthly newsletter and the willingness of our lay counsellors to speak to people who need our support.  Due to new callers and members requesting meetings, we are now holding quarterly meetings.

Around 2006 it became apparent that we needed further help in order to continue as a supportive group as we didn’t want to follow the demise of so many of the groups in the country who had folded.  Therefore, we sought the support of Joanne Gordon (nee Carlin) who is Co-ordinator of the trade union safety team (TRUST) (a  voluntary organisation that helps and support anyone with an industrial illness or injury).  She is also the Co-ordinator of the charity, the Derbyshire Asbestos Support Team (helping those who have asbestos-related diseases).   We needed someone who could co-ordinate our group on a voluntary basis and provide us with some space in an office and equipment to work with.  She was happy to do so provided her management committee approved.  Fortunately for us, they did, and we have grown in strength over the years since we were taken under the wings of TRUST and DAST.

We have a good membership, some of whom were our founder-members and a small, but active team.  All these years later we still have the support of Margot Boss, who, although she left for a few years to concentrate on bringing up her family, during this time Claire Roberts took over the position and maintained the links with us until Margot returned to work some years ago.

We also aim to be proactive as we raise awareness to the effects of excessive loud noise on our hearing system and especially to inform young people.  Our links with TRUST also enables us to attend and promote our group at health and safety conferences and other functions.  We have three trained Tinnitus Lay Counsellors, all of whom have tinnitus, but successfully manage this so are able to give supportive advice.  Our Counsellors are Audrey Carlin, Greg Hart and Stella Reddington and Joanne has recently undertaken the Tinnitus Advisor Training run by the British Tinnitus Association (BTA).   We feel, therefore, that we can offer positive and helpful support to anyone experiencing tinnitus.
